Broomstones Curling Club

A Complete History of Broomstones

By Elmer Osgood Cappers

The history of curling in the Boston area stretches back further than most people realize. Outdoor curling was played on Boston area ponds as early as 1835, and the sport has maintained a presence in the region ever since.

A landmark moment came on January 18, 1911, when the first artificial ice curling match in the world was played at Boston Arena. This placed the Boston curling community at the forefront of the sport's development in North America.

Curling at Brae Burn and The Country Club was well-documented from the late 1800s through the early 20th century. The first recorded visit by a Scottish curling team occurred in 1938, a mark of the sport's growing international connections in the region.

The 1950s and 1960s brought a period of expansion. Three clubs — Brae Burn, Wellesley, and Weston — began discussions about combining resources to build a dedicated curling facility. Those three clubs are immortalized in the Broomstones logo: the three arches represent the three founding clubs coming together under one roof.

On November 2, 1968, the Broomstones facility was officially dedicated. The founding membership comprised approximately 474 members across four categories:

  • Family members over 35: 219
  • Family members under 35: 100
  • Single members over 35: 95
  • Single members under 35: 60

Through the 1970s and into 1992, the club underwent changes in membership structure, organizational affiliations, and eventually a full amalgamation of its founding components into the unified Broomstones Curling Club known today.

Today, Broomstones operates four sheets of ice in Wayland, MA and serves nearly 500 members. We offer 17 leagues, a robust junior program, college curling, new curler training, and corporate rentals. We have produced competitive curlers at the national level and remain one of the most active and welcoming clubs in the Eastern United States.
