Broomstones seeks to establish and maintain an environment that enables members to participate joyfully and fully in the sport of curling in a fair and equitable manner and in the spirit of curling. This includes our gender minority members, who have a gender that is different from the one assigned to them at birth (e.g., transgender and/or nonbinary members).
League Play
For the purposes of playing in gender-restricted (e.g., single-gender or mixed) leagues at Broomstones, a member’s “curling gender” is whatever the member declares it to be during the registration process. A member may only change their curling gender between seasons or at the break between halves (e.g., a player in Derby may not change their curling gender mid-half, as it would create a gender imbalance on their team). No declaration of gender shall be required for play in open league formats.
Facilities
Broomstones recognizes that our current changing rooms/bathrooms do not adequately meet the needs of all our members and guests, including people with mobility concerns and our nonbinary members. Until such time as we can upgrade our facilities to be more accessible, nonbinary members are welcome and encouraged to use whichever change room feels safer or more comfortable to them, regardless of their “curling gender” for that half.
Competition
Broomstones members who plan to compete in a gender-restricted format in national or international events (or in qualifying events leading to such) are advised to ensure that their declaration of curling gender is in compliance with the gender-related policies of all relevant governing bodies, including USA Curling, the World Curling Federation, and the USA and World Anti-Doping Associations. Those policies can be found below.
